[Yokohama] Breakfast at Le Normandie, Hotel New Grand: A Monte Cristo With the Harbor in View

A weekend morning at Hotel New Grand, the classic 1927 hotel facing Yamashita Park in Yokohama — breakfast at Le Normandie, the French restaurant on the tower’s 5th floor. The hotel is famous as the birthplace of doria and Napolitan pasta, but in the morning the real star here is the wall of windows over Yokohama harbor.

A Harbor View Is Good for Your QOL

The dining room, with its blue carpet and chairs, has the air of an ocean liner. During the Obon holidays the tables held families, and also a few regulars taking their coffee alone, elegantly. Breakfast with the sea in view straightens your back a little. Folding a hotel breakfast like this into a weekend is, frankly, a decent investment in quality of life.

The Monte Cristo: Sweet, Then Salty

I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich: bacon and cheese pressed between slabs of golden French toast. The first bite is sweet; the salt comes chasing after; the round trip does not stop. On a humid summer morning, a sharply chilled iced coffee completes the picture. A properly excellent breakfast.

I hear there is also a Japanese restaurant in the hotel — homework for another weekend. For more Yokohama meals, see the French deli lunch in Motomachi or the Westin Yokohama club floor.

Notes from the Day

  • Le Normandie is the French restaurant on the 5th floor of Hotel New Grand’s tower, facing Yamashita Park — the classic hotel opened in 1927, and the windows look straight over Yokohama harbor.
  • Breakfast is open to non-guests as well (check hours and prices on the official site). A pleasant weekend buzz during the Obon holidays.
  • The Monte Cristo sandwich pairs sweet French toast with salty bacon — in summer, iced coffee completes it.
  • New Grand is also famous as the birthplace of doria and Napolitan pasta. The Japanese restaurant in the hotel is now on my list.
  • Details on the official Hotel New Grand website — as of my visit.
