Hermès MagSafe Card Case Review: It Holds One Card — and I Still Use It

Hermès MagSafe Card Case Review: It Holds One Card — and I Still Use It HERMES

The most important thing first.

This card case holds one card.

If you buy it expecting to fit three cards in and retire your wallet, you will be disappointed. I expected that too. And yet I have carried it for about a year and still use it. Here is the honest version, with photographs.

The colour, and the motif

An open Hermès orange box containing a light brown MagSafe card case

The box is Hermès orange, of course. Lift the lid and a single card case sits on a white tray.

The leather is a light brown. Depending on the light it reads as caramel, or as a beige with a little red in it. In person it is warmer and lighter than it looks on a screen — if you have been picturing a dark chocolate brown from the website photos, adjust your expectations.

Printed on the face is a line drawing of what looks like a building façade: an arched outline, fine vertical lines, an orange tab at the lower centre and a small blue label at the top left, all framed by white saddle stitching. It appears to be the motif Hermès calls “Faubourg” — a drawing of the house’s original store at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. (I no longer have the purchase paperwork, so I will not state it as certain.)

From across a room it reads as plain brown leather. Up close, a picture appears. That control of viewing distance is very well judged.

Hermès sells its MagSafe card cases under the name Emmen, with several different motifs. It is worth comparing them on the official site before you commit — they are quite different objects depending on the print.

How it looks on the phone

It snaps onto the back of the iPhone.

Mounted, it is more discreet than I expected. The back of a phone is a large surface, and a piece of leather this size sitting low-centre does not shout. There is no oversized logo, so it never feels like showing off.

It does add thickness. The phone rocks slightly on a desk, and you notice it in a pocket. That part you simply accept.

The magnet holds

The question everyone asks about a MagSafe accessory is whether it falls off.

It does not. The magnet is strong enough — it sits firmly on the back and does not shift or drop in normal use. Taking the phone in and out of a bag is no problem at all.

One caveat: if you use a phone case, the extra thickness weakens the hold. If you plan to attach it over a thick case, test that before you buy.

One card. That is the conclusion.

On capacity — not the specification, but what it is actually like to use: one card goes in and out comfortably. Force in a second and the leather is stretched, which is bad for the leather and makes retrieval a fingertip struggle.

So this is not a slim wallet. It is a way to carry exactly one card on the back of your phone.

Why I still use it after a year

So why keep using something that holds one card?

Because “one card is enough” turned out to describe far more situations than I expected.

  • Dinner nearby, carrying one credit card
  • Travelling — leaving the hotel with just the room key card
  • The gym, or a walk, when you want to leave the wallet behind
  • Tapping through a ticket gate with a transit card, phone and all

The goal was to stop carrying both a wallet and a phone and carry only the phone. For that purpose, the storage actually required was one card.

And because it is in front of you every day, the quality of the material does real work. After a year the leather has softened and the corners have rounded very slightly. It is the kind of object that improves with handling.

Specifications and notes

  • Acquired: summer 2025. Hermès MagSafe card case.
  • Colour and design: light brown leather with a printed line-drawing motif; white stitching, orange tab, small blue label.
  • Capacity: one card in practice. Do not buy it planning to carry more.
  • Magnet: holds firmly in normal use. Verify compatibility if you use a thick phone case.
  • In use: about a year, still in daily use. Leather has softened, corners slightly rounded.
  • Good for: people who want to leave the house without a wallet, carrying one card and a phone.
  • Not for: people looking for a wallet replacement, or who need several cards on them.
  • Choosing: compare the motifs on the official site, then see one in person. The colour reads noticeably differently in the hand than in photographs.

“It only holds one card” is not a flaw in this object. It is the specification. Buy it understanding that, and it delivers.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards does it actually hold?

One. Not as a specification argument but as a practical one: one card goes in and out comfortably, while forcing in a second stretches the leather and turns retrieval into a fingertip struggle. This is not a slim wallet — it is a way to carry exactly one card on the back of your phone.

Does the magnet hold, or does it fall off?

It holds. The magnet is strong enough that it sits firmly on the back of the phone and does not shift or drop in normal use, including taking the phone in and out of a bag. One caveat: if you use a phone case, the extra thickness weakens the hold, so test that before you buy.

Is the colour the same as in the online photographs?

Not quite. Mine is a light brown that reads as caramel in some light and as a beige with a little red in it in others. In person it is warmer and lighter than it looks on a screen — if you have been picturing a dark chocolate brown from website photos, adjust your expectations.

What is the design on the front?

A line drawing of what looks like a building façade: an arched outline, fine vertical lines, an orange tab at the lower centre and a small blue label at the top left, framed by white saddle stitching. It appears to be the motif Hermès calls “Faubourg”, after the house’s original store at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris — I no longer have the purchase paperwork, so I will not state that as certain. Hermès sells its MagSafe card cases under the name Emmen with several different motifs, so compare them on the official site before you commit.

Does it add noticeable bulk to the phone?

Yes. Mounted, it is more discreet than I expected and there is no oversized logo, but it does add thickness: the phone rocks slightly on a desk, and you notice it in a pocket. That part you simply accept.
