In August 2023 we stayed at The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama as a family. Two things stayed with me: the indoor pool, and where we sat the next morning.

Into the room just before three, on 14 August
We got into the room a little before three in the afternoon on 14 August.
The bedcover carries a geometric pattern and the room is pulled together in light colours. The window is large and the daylight comes well in. For reference, the hotel opened on 23 September 2020 at 5-3 Minatomirai in Nishi-ku, near Pacifico Yokohama, and all 146 of its rooms are 47 square metres or larger.

The pool is indoors
The pool is inside. Light drops from the ceiling and the surface of the water is bright. It is a heated indoor pool of roughly 20 metres, part of the spa.
A few other guests were swimming that day. Mid-August, so of course — but it does not fill the way an outdoor pool does. And being indoors, you are not managing the sun, which in that month counts for a lot.

After swimming we went back up and rested with the curtains still open.
The next morning’s table was the best of it

The next morning we sat down to eat.
White cloth, knife and fork and glass laid out, a large window with the outside bright behind it. Breakfast is usually the meal you compress into the gap between two moves. That morning it wasn’t. We sat, we looked out, we ate slowly.
The moment a trip feels like a luxury is not necessarily the moment you are eating something expensive. A morning with nothing to hurry for is already enough.
