Four nights. Outside the window there is green, all the way across, and the sun goes down into it. That is more or less the whole impression the room left.
Into the room at six in the evening
On the day we arrived, we got into the room at exactly six.
A sofa, an armchair and a round side table at the near end. Behind them a writing desk, and the bed furthest in. Dark wood floor throughout, so the sleeping half and the sitting half are loosely divided rather than walled off.
We barely unpacked and went straight down to eat.
Fruit, and three sweets
There was a bowl of fruit on the table, a small plant beside it, and in front of that a wooden tray with three orange sweets on it. From the first day, there was colour in the room.
The window was a field of green
What lies in front of this hotel is the Royal Bangkok Sports Club — a racecourse and golf course in the middle of the city.
You see it head-on from the room and from the breakfast table. Look down on Bangkok from height anywhere else and the buildings are packed in; here alone they are not. Toward evening the sun drops onto that green.
By seven in the morning it is already bright
We took breakfast from before seven. The buffet counters run along one side, and from the window seats you get yesterday’s green again.
The third morning and the fourth morning, same seat, same view. Seeing one view repeatedly while travelling is not a bad thing. The weather changes day to day, so the same window is not the same window.
The same place, at night and in the morning
At night the lighting inside is dropped, and there are large blue flowers arranged along the corridor.
On the last morning I went through the same spot at ten to seven. The flowers were exactly as they had been; only the light had changed.
Four nights is long enough for the building’s circulation to get into your body. You reach the point of knowing which turn puts you where — and that is about when you leave.
