[Seoul Observations] The Compose Coffee Phenomenon: The Staggering Scale of Korea’s Cafe Economy

Travel

Walking through Seoul, there is one brand that is nearly impossible to go a day without seeing: Compose Coffee. The density is something else entirely. Turn any corner, and there it is again — a deployment that genuinely deserves the phrase “absolutely everywhere.”

What catches the eye most immediately is the scale of the promotion. Above one building: a massive billboard featuring BTS’s V (Taehyung), his gentle expression watching over the city below. Is there a cafe company in Japan capable of this kind of cityscape-scale advertising, with a talent of this caliber?

A Cafe Culture Economy Unlike Japan’s

In Korea, the cafe has evolved far beyond simply serving drinks — it has become a massive economic sphere. The sheer scale of promotion, rarely seen in domestic Japanese chains, speaks to the intensity of competition in this market, and reflects the outsized cultural influence that the cafe industry wields here.

Even from a business perspective, the capital investment required for this kind of brand strategy points to something beyond simple high-volume economics — it requires a powerful brand strategy and a consumption velocity deeply embedded in daily life.

Being physically present in this atmosphere allowed me to feel, once again, the distinct evolution of the Korean market within Asia. This sense of surprise and discovery — that too is one of the important forms of wisdom that travel provides.
