Here is the conclusion first. The Mount Hakodate ropeway closes for a substantial stretch every year, and the day we went fell inside it.
Turn up at Hakodate Station without knowing that and you will be rebuilding your evening on the spot. The answer that night was a taxi. Here is exactly what was happening.
In 2026 the closure ran 20 October to 8 November
The Mount Hakodate ropeway shuts for statutory inspection. In 2026 that was 20 October to 8 November, twenty days, according to the operating company announcement.
It happens every year and the dates move. If you are going to Hakodate in autumn, check before you book the hotel. Twenty days is a span you can plan around.
The flip side: you can still get to the summit during the closure. The road does not shut.
The bus queue is not an option in the cold
With the ropeway down, most people shift to the Mount Hakodate climbing bus. What I saw was the result.
The queue was extraordinarily long. It was also outdoors. A Hakodate evening in early November is punishing if you are standing still. People were going to be thoroughly chilled by the time they reached the top, which is no state in which to look at a view.
The length of the line mattered less than the condition attached to it: standing outside. In summer that is tolerable. In this season it is not.
The taxi was the right answer
Which is why the summit was full of taxis. Everyone had reached the same conclusion.
A taxi is warm, skips the queue and goes straight up. Split between several people the cost does not spiral. On that night, body temperature mattered more than fare.
We had already taken a taxi to Goryokaku Tower earlier the same day, where the driver stayed on as a guide. The day ended up being rescued by taxis twice.

A different kind of night view from Tokyo
Now the view itself.
I know the Tokyo night view well. High-rises lit from the ground up, light stacked vertically into a mass. Hakodate is not that.
First, the light curves along the bay. The city sits on a narrow isthmus with sea on both sides, so the band of light is pinched into an hourglass and everything outside it is complete darkness. The boundary between lit and unlit is drawn hard.
Second, the light runs to the horizon. Past the pinch, a flat spread of light continues away into the distance. Tokyo performs with height; Hakodate performs with extent. Calling both of them night views feels like a failure of vocabulary.

It is cold. Dress for it
The observation deck is on a mountain with nothing to break the wind, and it is measurably colder than the streets below.
In early November I was properly cold. Going up in what you wore around town is a decision you will regret. Bring gloves, a scarf and a hat. Your hands suffer most, because you spend longer than you expect with them out of your pockets taking photographs.
The deck is crowded, too. Factor in the time spent waiting for a position at the rail.

A frog sign on the way down
On the way back the driver pointed out a road sign.
It warns of Ezo toads crossing. A yellow disc with a toad on it and a plate below from the Hakodate Rotary Club. We were told it is the only one of its kind in Japan.
Being shown that immediately after the night view is disarming enough to make you laugh. We would never have noticed it alone. This is the argument for having a local take you somewhere.

In short
- The ropeway closes annually for inspection. In 2026 it was 20 October to 8 November, twenty days. Check before booking an autumn trip
- During the closure the bus queue becomes enormous. The problem is less the length than standing outside in it
- In this season, take a taxi. Warm, no queue, straight to the summit
- The Hakodate night view is not the Tokyo one. Light curving along the bay and running to the horizon
- City clothing is not enough. Gloves, scarf, hat
Frequently asked questions
Does the Mount Hakodate ropeway ever close?
Yes. It closes for a stretch every year for statutory inspection. In 2026 that was 20 October to 8 November, twenty days. The dates change, so check the operator announcement.
How do I reach the summit while it is closed?
The Mount Hakodate climbing bus or a taxi. On the night we went, the bus queue was extremely long and outdoors, so we took a taxi.
Taxi or bus?
It depends on the season. In the cold, a warm car that goes straight up beats standing outside in a long line. Split between several people the cost is manageable.
How is the Hakodate night view different from Tokyo?
Tokyo is vertical light from high-rise buildings. In Hakodate the light curves along the bay with pure darkness outside it, then continues to the horizon. It performs with extent rather than height.
What should I wear?
Noticeably warmer than what you need in town. In early November, bring gloves, a scarf and a hat. Your hands are out of your pockets for photographs longer than you expect.
