fav Hakodate: five minutes from the station, and the room changes colour

Here is the conclusion first. Choose a Hakodate hotel inside a 500-metre radius of the station west exit and you have solved the trip. The morning market, the tram, the famous burger chain and the convenience store that grills yakitori to order are all inside that circle.

We stayed at fav Hakodate: 30 rooms, five minutes on foot from the west exit, right beside the morning market. We walked there straight off the four-hour train from Sapporo.

The room changes colour

The most entertaining thing about this hotel is the lighting.

A lot of indirect lighting is built into the room, and you can change its colour. Set it white and you have a competent business hotel room. Set it purple and you are somewhere else entirely. We turned everything purple to see what would happen.

Call it a gimmick if you like, but it lodges in the memory. Having something to operate the moment you walk in is a clear answer to the sameness of business hotels.

Back on an ordinary setting it is a calm, wood-toned room: a desk with a round mirror, two pendant lights, a wall-mounted television. Not large, but the layout is thought through.

The bathroom is better than it needs to be

The water areas were a pleasant surprise. A standalone basin with a large mirror, and behind it a bathtub. Planting in the corner, tiled floor. For a station-front hotel at this price, that is unusual.

The tub is freestanding with a rim you can sit on. If you arrive expecting a moulded unit bath, you are wrong in the right direction.

What 30 rooms gets you

There are 30 rooms in total: 16 doubles, 13 twins and one suite.

What a small hotel actually buys you is this. The lift is not busy in the morning. There is no queue at check-in. Nobody pools in the common areas. The things that wear you down in a large hotel never start.

There is a cafe on the ground floor, useful for a short sit. The shared spaces are wood-panelled with benches and artwork, closer to a gallery corridor than a hallway.

For drivers: 20 free parking spaces

This is worth stating plainly. The hotel has 20 parking spaces and guests use them free of charge.

Hakodate has a compact centre where paid parking gets competitive. Station front, free, 20 spaces. If you are touring southern Hokkaido by car, that alone is a reason to book.

Two caveats: you cannot reserve a space in advance, and there is a monthly-rental car park next door that is easy to confuse with it, so park on the hotel side where the rope is. InterContinental Sapporo also turned out to have surface parking, so this trip was unusually kind to drivers.

What is within walking distance

Most of what you came to Hakodate to eat is on foot from here.

  • Hakodate morning market: right nearby. This is where breakfast happens
  • Lucky Pierrot: a burger you can only eat in Hakodate
  • Hasegawa Store: a convenience store that grills yakitori and packs it into a lunchbox to order
  • the tram: one line out to Hachimanzaka and Motomachi
