Here is the conclusion first. You can only eat Lucky Pierrot in Hakodate. All 17 branches are in Hakodate and the area around it.
A chain that can only be experienced on location. That structure is what turns a burger shop into a destination. It was founded in 1987, and its signature Chinese Chicken Burger was named Japan best local hamburger by the Nikkei.
We went in on our last half day, after walking Motomachi.
The interior carries a lot of information
The first thing that happens is that the room overwhelms you.
Red and green banquettes, stained-glass-style lamps, notices across every wall. It is not that coherence was attempted and missed; coherence was never a consideration. The effect is of an independent cafe that multiplied, and it runs in precisely the opposite direction from chain anonymity.

The counter is the same. Menu boards, merchandise, flags. Everywhere you look something is written.

A long menu
The board carries a serious number of burgers, and then curry and omurice as well. It does not stay inside the category of burger shop.
First time, the obvious move is the Chinese Chicken Burger. But if you have company, split the order and try different things. The best thing we ate that day was not the signature item.

A burger with zangi in it
What we ordered was a burger built around zangi, the Hokkaido term for fried chicken.
It comes wrapped in paper and it is heavy in the hand. The chicken inside is clearly not a fast food patty; it has the shape and the texture of karaage. The coating holds, and it makes a noise when you bite it.
The construction is a burger format with an entirely different dish dropped into it. Which is why it tastes like no chain you know. Not tasting like them is the reason to eat it in Hakodate specifically.

The omurice rice was not ketchup rice
The thing that stayed with me was not the burger. It was the omurice.
The rice inside tastes unlike ordinary ketchup rice. The acidity sits lower and there is a deeper savouriness behind it. Something like Worcestershire sauce has to be in there.
I had assumed ketchup rice was a dish where cooks cannot really differentiate. Finding a clear difference caught me off guard. Putting something like that in a non-signature item is where the depth of this place shows.
Visitors order the famous one and leave. What the locals keep coming back for is probably on the other side of the menu.
The flight home happened to be a Pokemon aircraft
One last thing about the journey back.
Looking out from the gate, the aircraft was a special livery with the Pokemon Vulpix on it. We had not booked it on purpose. It was chance.

Inside, the headrest covers had Vulpix on them too. There were items in the in-flight shop you cannot buy anywhere else, so we bought some.
An unplanned piece of luck at the end of a trip changes the aftertaste of the whole thing. We went home happy. Next time I would like the Chiikawa jet.
