The two of us stayed at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama. Sea-view room, and we opened a bottle of champagne for no particular reason.
The sea is in the window
The room is done in muted colours and the window is large.
One thing worth getting straight, because the hotel is often filed under Minato Mirai: it is not there. The Hyatt Regency Yokohama is at 280-2 Yamashita-cho in Naka-ku, about three minutes on foot from Nihon-Odori Station on the Minatomirai Line, between the prefectural government offices, Chinatown and Yamashita Park. It opened on 23 May 2020 with 315 rooms — 297 of them 36 square metres, and 18 at 72.
Outside the window was the harbour. Cranes, ships at their moorings, and the water opening out behind them. Yokohama is a city where the sea is never far from wherever you happen to be standing.
We sat on the sofa and looked out for a while. When it is the two of us, that stretch of time gets long. Time moves differently on a stay with children in it.
It was not an occasion
We opened the champagne. Not a birthday, not an anniversary.
There is a way of thinking where you save the special thing for a marker on the calendar. There is another where you can simply open it, no reason required. This was the second kind.
When you drink to celebrate, the drinking becomes a means to something. With no reason attached, what is left is only the taste and the hours. Sometimes that is the version that stays with you.
