Hermès Sac Orange: 5.3 × 6 cm, but It Hangs 23.5 cm

Hermès Sac Orange: 5.3 × 6 cm, but It Hangs 23.5 cm Luxury-log

The Sac Orange is a bag charm: Hermès’s orange shopping bag, shrunk down.

The numbers matter here. The bag itself is 5.3 cm wide by 6 cm tall — but the total length including the handle is about 23.5 cm. So if you picture a small charm, you will be surprised how far it hangs. That length is why placement changes everything.

Why the box is so long

A long orange Hermès box with the Sac Orange charm in front of it

This is the box it arrives in — conspicuously long next to the charm itself. It has to lie a 23.5 cm object down flat, so that is the shape you get.

The bag is orange embossed leather with the Hermès carriage logo and the word HERMÈS pressed into the front. The handle is brown leather. Officially the colour is orange × brown, and those two colours together are what makes it read as the paper shopping bag.

Depending on the year and version the leather is embossed calf, Agneau Milo (lamb) or Swift. Retail sits around ¥60,000, varying with material and year.

It works hardest on a black bag

The Sac Orange attached at the base of a black Birkin’s handle, against gold hardware

Here it is on a black Birkin. The orange-against-black contrast is strong enough that this is the only spot on the bag that carries colour from a distance.

It is tied at the base of the left handle. The padlock and clochette sit on the right, so the weight and the eye are balanced left to right. Putting both on the same side made one half of the bag look cluttered.

Hung this way, the tip falls about a third of the way up from the bottom of the bag. You can see how 23.5 cm lands as a proportion against a Birkin 25–30.

The absence of hardware turns out to matter

There is almost no hard hardware on this charm. It is a leather strap threaded and tied, and the weight is essentially just the leather.

Compared with a sculptural charm like the Rodeo, nothing rigid knocks against the bag — leather touches leather, so you are not watching for contact marks. In exchange, the handle develops a bend where it has been tied. That is structural and unavoidable.

Which bags it suits

  • Black, navy, taupe and other plain bags: maximum contrast, and where it looks best
  • Orange-family bags: it disappears into the bag. Little point
  • Heavily decorated bags: too much information. The plainer the bag, the better this works
  • Small bags: at 23.5 cm it reaches the bottom of a mini and past it

Summary

  • The bag is 5.3 × 6 cm, but the total length with the handle is about 23.5 cm — it hangs further than you expect
  • Colour is orange × brown; versions exist in embossed calf, Agneau Milo and Swift
  • Retail around ¥60,000, depending on material and year
  • Best on a plain dark bag; wasted on an orange one
  • Tie it opposite the padlock so the bag balances left to right
  • No rigid hardware, so it does not mark the bag — but the handle takes a permanent bend
