Morning: Start your journey from Kaminarimon to the main hall of Sensoji Temple for worship.
The first thing I headed for on the morning I alighted at Asakusa Station was the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). This large lantern, a 5-minute walk from theTokyo Metro Ginza Line orthe Toei Asakusa Line, is the symbol of Sensoji Temple, a historic gate built in 1635. On an autumn morning when we visited, as we passed through the soft morning light illuminating the lanterns, the children’s eyes lit up, “A big lamp! their eyes lit up. My husband and I made a family offering and joined hands in the main hall, where our hearts were purified as we prayed, remembering the history of the Yoshiwara area as a sacred site for the 2025 NHK historical drama “Belabo”. Strolling the temple grounds, admiring the graceful five-story pagoda, and taking pictures with the family were exceptional. Senso-ji Temple is a perfect place for families to relax and experience the tradition.
Admission is free, and the temple grounds are open 24 hours a day (the main hall is open from 6:00 a.m. to around 5:00 p.m.). Visiting first thing in the morning will allow you to enjoy the quiet atmosphere with fewer crowds. Check the official website ( Senso-ji Temple ) for access and YouTube live streaming. 2025 is the fall foliage season, and the illumination of the five-story pagoda is especially beautiful.
LUNCH: Gourmet food experience on Nakamise-dori
After visiting the shrine, go to Nakamise-dori for lunch. The 250-meter approach from the Kaminarimon to the main hall is lined with 89 souvenir stores, making it a paradise for foodies. We chose the popular sweet potato sweets and eel rice balls (500 yen each). The sweet potato butter dorayaki, freshly steamed sweet potato with butter, was a hit with the kids, who said, “Sweet and fluffy! The children were delighted with the sweet potato butter dorayaki, which is made with freshly steamed sweet potatoes with butter. My husband was pleased with the aroma of the eel onigiri, and I was impressed by the taste accented by the sourness of the pickled plum. The historical romance of the Yoshiwara Shrine has been added to the area with the increase of pilgrimage goods to the shrine due to the boom of the 2025 Taiga Drama. The Nakamise is the perfect place to experience the vibrancy of Asakusa.
Hours of operation are from 10:00 to around 17:00 (depending on the store). It is recommended to aim for weekdays when it is crowded. For details, check the official website ( Nakamise-dori ). Other gourmet foods in Asakusa, such as loach dishes and hamburgers, are also attractive, but eating out can be easily enjoyed with the whole family.
Evening: Rest downtown at Asakusa View Hotel
After lunch, we checked into the Asakusa View Hotel in the evening. This hotel, a 10-minute walk from Sensoji Temple, boasts spacious rooms for families. The family room with a view of the Tokyo Sky Tree® has a spacious bed, and the children are happy to look out the window at the night view. The view of the Kaminarimon gate lit up at dusk was a highlight of the trip. For dinner, we enjoyed a Japanese/Western buffet of local ingredients at the hotel restaurant. Fresh seafood and Asakusa’s famous tempura were a big hit with the kids, who were especially surprised by the plum-flavored dessert. At the breakfast buffet, freshly baked bread and island fruit juices were impressive. The warm hospitality of the staff was also pleasant, and I was delighted to receive a map of Asakusa as a gift for my children. The large public bath was very relaxing, and bathing at night made my body feel warm and fuzzy. The hotel is in the center of Asakusa, convenient for exploring the area.
Accommodation plans start at around 15,000 yen per room per night including breakfast. Sky Tree View Rooms are also available. For details, please check the official website ( Asakusa View Hotel ). While other hotels in Asakusa are attractive, the view and convenience of this hotel are exceptional.

Morning: Experience an amusement park with an Edo-style atmosphere at Hanayashiki
After enjoying breakfast, we walked 10 minutes to Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest amusement park established in 1853, with retro attractions that are sure to appeal. The family enjoyed the wooden horse and Ferris wheel (500 yen each, 30 minutes). The children were excited, saying, “It’s just like in the Edo period! and shared the thrill of the roller coaster with my husband. I also enjoyed a picnic on the park’s lawn, and visited a special Yoshiwara-themed exhibition linked to the 2025 Taiga Drama. We also enjoyed a shamisen (three-stringed Japanese banjo) show in the park’s entertainment hall, and my family applauded. This facility is a unique spot that combines Asakusa’s history and entertainment to stimulate family creativity.
Admission is 1,200 yen for adults and 800 yen for children. The park is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (varies in winter). For details, please check the official website ( Hanayashiki ). Cooler hours in the morning are recommended.
Tips for a smooth trip
There are a few things I tried to keep in mind in order to fully enjoy my trip to Sensoji Temple. First, for transportation, use Asakusa Station as a base and walk or take a bus. Kaminarimon and Hanayashiki are compact and can be efficiently visited in a day, but if you are with children, a rickshaw (about 5,000 yen per ride) is convenient. If you visit first thing in the morning, you will have the quiet precincts of the temple all to yourself. Avoid the crowds before 11:00 a.m. for Nakamise food strolls, and secure reservations in advance for Hanayashiki attractions. At the Asakusa View Hotel, consult the Sky Tree View hours before check-in for peace of mind, and add Yoshiwara Shrine to your 2025 Taiga Drama Holy Land pilgrimage. Check the official website for seasonal events (Kaminarimon Bon Odori in September and Asakusa Saijoki no Yoru no Kane Bell in December) to further add color to your trip. Don’t forget to bring hydration and sunscreen for the kids.
Asakusa’s downtown atmosphere brought smiles to the family’s faces. When the children stood under the lanterns and said, “Let’s come back!” under the lanterns.
