A trip to Shimanami Kaido has become an exciting experience for the whole family. The beautiful bridges connecting the blue islands of the Seto Inland Sea, the thrilling feeling of riding a bicycle through the wind, the fresh local seafood and the warmth of the islands’ gentle hot springs. All these moments were a fusion of nature and culture. Here are some recommendations for what I discovered with my family on this trip and what makes Shimanami Kaido so charming. The scenic slopes of Onomichi, the spectacular view of the Tatara Bridge, a cozy stay in Imabari and the simple island cuisine. This trip is sure to leave a deep aftertaste in your heart. Why not deepen your special bond with your family or loved ones on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea?
Morning: Mountain hike in Onomichi and view of Senkoji Temple
In the morning, after getting off the train at Onomichi Station, the first stop is Senkoji Temple. Located 15 minutes from the station, this temple is a landmark of Onomichi. Stone steps lead up to a panoramic view of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. One autumn morning when we visited the temple, the kids were all excited as we walked up the slope and admired the autumn colors of the leaves. They were so excited. My husband and I walked through the three-story pagoda of the temple and looked at the bridges of the Shimanami Sea Path from the observation deck. The time we spent in the main hall of the temple, holding hands and talking about the future of the islands as a family, was a peaceful experience. Onomichi is also known as a city of literature, and it is a joy to meet cats in the alleyways of the hillsides. Senko-ji Temple is a great place for families to relax and experience history.
Admission is free and there are about 125 stone steps (ropeway available, 700 yen round trip). Visit the temple around 9am to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Check the official website (Onomichi Tourist Association ) for access (walking distance from Onomichi Station) and events. 2025 fall foliage season is especially beautiful.

LUNCH: Fresh seafood lunch on Innoshima Island
After visiting Senkoji Temple, take a 20-minute ferry ride to Innoshima Island and head to Innoshima Kaisen Ichiba for lunch. Located halfway down Shimanami Kaido, this market is a food street lined with fresh seafood from local fishermen. The scent of the sea spread gently as we entered the lively restaurant. I ordered the kaisen-don set (1,800 yen). Tuna, squid and sweet shrimp were colorfully arranged on the plate, and the children’s eyes lit up as they said, “It’s like a jewelry box from the sea!” and their eyes lit up. My husband put a glass of locally brewed sake with it and said, “This freshness is what Setouchi is all about”. I was also impressed by the taste of the island salt. The accompanying salad of island vegetables was refreshing and perfect for a post-biking meal. I was able to experience the fishing culture of Innoshima up close during a meal with the family. Seafood from the Shimanami Kaido is an important source of energy for the journey.
Open from 9:00-17:00 (until 16:00). During the high season, it is recommended to use the weekdays. For more information, please visit the official website (Shimanami Tourism Website). 2025 Kaisen Fair (around May) is also attractive, but the Kaisen Don is suitable for families all year round.

Evening: hot spring and relaxation at the Imabari International Hotel
After lunch, drive for about an hour by car along Shimanami Kaido to Imabari, where you will check into the Imabari International Hotel in the evening. Located at the end of Shimanami Kaido, this hotel is a hot spring resort overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and has spacious, family-friendly rooms. The sea-view family rooms have spacious beds, and children will be delighted to see the lights of the bridge from the window. The view of the sea at dusk was a highlight of the trip. Dinner was served at the hotel buffet, with Japanese and Western dishes made from local produce. The fresh seafood sashimi and imabari yakitori were a big hit with the kids, who were particularly surprised by the plum-flavored desserts. The breakfast buffet with freshly baked bread and fruit juices from the island was impressive. The warm hospitality of the staff was also pleasant, and I was delighted to receive a Shimanami card as a gift for my children. The hot spring water is gentle on the skin, and my body felt warm and cozy during the evening bath. Thanks to its proximity to the bridge, it’s also easy to cycle the next day.
Accommodation prices start at around 20,000 yen per room per night including breakfast. Rooms with hot springs are also available. Details can be found on the official website (Imabari Kokusai Hotel ). Other hotels at Shimanami Kaido are attractive, but the atmosphere of the resort and the view at this hotel are exceptional.

Morning: Cycling and Mankeji Temple on Omishima
After breakfast, head to Omishima Island, about 30 minutes away by car. The island is located in the middle of the Shimanami Kaido and is a mecca for cyclists. The family enjoyed exploring the bridges on rental bikes (2,000 yen per day, 2 hours required). The kids were thrilled to see the sea glistening from the bridge as they rode across the spectacular Tatara Bridge. The kids were so excited. I too was impressed by the view of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea while pedaling with my family. My husband and I took a detour to the Manke Temple on the island. We spent some time walking around the temple grounds to view the national monument, the Yakushi Nyorai statue, which was a calming experience. The bike paths are mostly flat and suitable for beginners and can be ridden at your own pace. Omishima is a great place to experience the highlights of Shimanami Kaido.
Rental bikes are available at stores in Imabari and Onomichi, and helmets are free. For more information, visit the official website (Shimanami Cycling ). The 2025 cycling event (Spring Shimanami Ride, around April) is also recommended.
Tips for a smooth ride
To fully enjoy your trip on the Shimanami Kaido, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, you should use a car or ferry from Onomichi to Imabari. If you are traveling by bike, book it in advance at a bike rental shop. If you have children, choose the flat Innoshima-Omishima route. The stone steps of Senkoji Temple are easily accessible by cable car. If you want to have lunch at the Innoshima Seafood Market, arrive at 11 am to shorten the waiting time. Check the bridge lighting times before checking in at the Imabari International Hotel to be sure. Visit Mankeji Temple in the morning for a quiet visit. Check the official website for seasonal events (Murakami Pirates in Golden Week 2025, Seafood BBQ in May) to make your trip even more colorful. Cash is essential on the island, so keep coins handy. Don’t forget to bring something to drink and sunscreen for children.
The contrast between the bridge and the island in the Seto Inland Sea brought a smile to the family’s faces. As the children crossed the bridge, they said, “Let’s go again!” said.
